ABOUT THE ARTWORK

"Dare Dare", Quick Analysis of a Work of Art:

What does this painting showing two portraits of roosters represent?
Laurence Saunois did not choose to represent just any breed of hen. She has voluntarily associated an old breed that has fallen into oblivion and a breed that is the pride of traditional breeders.

The rooster on the left, with its characteristic crest and shiny black plumage, is of the "poule de la Flèche" breed, originating from the village of Mézeray, located in the Sarthe (France) and named after the nearby town of La Flèche. The first traces of this breed date back to the 15th century. This gallinaceous has such a delicate flesh that it made the fortune of its breeders in its time and was presented and reserved on the best tables. Nowadays, some breeders continue to raise this rare breed for connoisseurs and prestigious tables.

The rooster on the right is of the white Bresse-Gauloise breed. These poultry, whose reputation is not to be made any more, are raised in order to produce a flesh of quality and are the only ones to be exploited commercially and recognized as AOC by the law of 1957.

They are two of the rare French breeds of hens to be included among the 108 recognized breeds of hens of the British Poultry Standard.

I wanted to represent ancient breeds of chickens to go against the intensive breeding of chickens in food factories that exist in many countries. Everything is standardized and animal husbandry is no exception to the rule. By wanting to intensify productivity at all costs, the old breeds with their specificities disappear or have disappeared completely. Genetics is impoverished. Fortunately, some enthusiasts are fighting to preserve these ancient breeds.

Technical information and realization :

This painting was made on Masonite that the artist brought from the United States. This support allows a great freedom in the research of nuances and details.

When she saw these roosters in a conservatory of old breeds, she could not help but want to paint them to create a portrait painting. These roosters were in the light and it sublimated their features and contrasts: the black plumage of one and the white of the other, their distinctive crests in all shades of red. She used Schaal oil paints to obtain the most flamboyant tones. His colors are very rich in pigments and give a beautiful luminosity to a painting. The white for example is made with walnut oil according to an ancestral recipe.

While painting them, the painter could not help but draw a parallel with the helmets and protections of the gladiators in the time of Ancient Rome. That's why she called this painting "Gladiators".

Animal Painter and Woman Artist :

Laurence Saunois is a realistic and even hyper-realistic animal artist. Her oil paintings are studied to emphasize her subjects and her symbols. Often behind each painting, there is a story: an encounter, an observation, a moment of emotion.
