"Dare Dare! Quick analysis of a work of art :

"Flamingos are very easily recognized by their plumage and their long legs. They are the symbol of the brackish coastal areas. I have already had the chance to observe them in the Camargue. They formed large colonies, all busy probing the bottom of the lagoon with their legs and filtering the water with their beaks in search of shrimps which give them their characteristic color.

Several threats weigh on them. First of all, the galloping urbanization. Their resting and reproduction areas are decreasing. Then, the colonies are very sensitive to disturbance during nesting periods. A single disturbance can cause an entire breeding season to fail. Finally, the climatic hazards play a great role on the survival of the species? A very strong period of frost can cause the death of tens or even hundreds of individuals.

I represented a flamingo as it was about to move into a resting position, its neck folded and its head buried in its plumage."

Realize the feathers in paint :

Painting a bird's plumage for an artist is to mix technical data and poetry. Indeed, not only do feathers allow us to determine the species, the sex, the age and even the state of health of the bird and are in a way its "visiting card" but, in addition, they inexorably evoke a certain fragility, softness and vulnerability. They catch the light beautifully and offer the painter infinite possibilities.

Respecting their "movements": With a very fine brush, I create each feather by giving it a movement. Each category of feather has a particular implantation. To respect it is to give coherence to the plumage.

The importance of background

Unless the animal is represented in a landscape, the choice of background colors in a portrait is essential. One of the secrets of success is to respect the color harmonies used to paint the animal and to use the same tonal gradations.

This way, the painting will have a good homogeneity as a whole.

I apply the background with a broad brush, round or flat depending on the case.
