DESCRIPTION
It was during a visit to the garden in autumn that the artist saw sparrows feeding on the sunflower seeds still present on the dried flowers that dotted the large flower bed. She was able to observe the scene for many minutes. The birds, used to seeing people, did not flee and stayed there, quietly enjoying the abundance of food.
The artist wanted to make a drawing showing a male bird trying to catch some seeds and a female bird from behind, with her head in a sunflower, eating again and again.
